Case studies
Real examples of short-term assessments, and what they led to.
Avoiding waking night care for an adult with learning disabilities
- How they presented
- An adult with learning disabilities in supported living. Staff were worried about night-time visits to the freezer and asked for waking night support. The council wanted objective evidence before deciding.
- Work done
- A 3-week assessment with door sensors on the fridge and freezer, and a motion and door sensor in the bedroom, to compare night-time bedroom and kitchen activity.
- Results
- They slept well and did not leave their room overnight. The freezer visits were happening during the day, not at night. The care team did not need to arrange waking night care.
£54,600 a year in care costs avoided, while keeping the person independent.
Extending time at home at the end of life
- How they presented
- Discharged home ahead of end-of-life care. Howz was used to give them as much safe time at home as possible, and to show when a move to a care home became necessary.
- Work done
- A 3-month assessment with door sensors, smart plugs and motion sensors in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hallway, with alerts for low activity and late wake-ups.
- Results
- They coped independently at first. Their mobility declined gradually over 2.5 months, which showed clearly when a care home place became necessary. The evidence gave the council confidence to offer a route home first.
£17,500 in costs avoided: 2.5 extra months at home for the person, and 2.5 months of care home costs saved.
Confirming a safe overnight routine to avoid extra night care
- How they presented
- An older adult with dementia in extra care housing. Staff were concerned they might be leaving the property overnight and recommended night-time care.
- Work done
- A 3-week assessment using Howz machine learning to work out whether the person was at home, and whether they left the property overnight.
- Results
- There was no sign of them leaving during the night, or of any absence longer than 20 minutes at a time. Their routine was stable throughout, so night-time care visits were not needed.
£30,000 a year in care costs avoided, while keeping the person independent.
An impartial view, around the clock
Our technology is prescribed on a short term placement, typically two to eight weeks, for an impartial view of someone’s requirements around the clock. The findings enable care teams to prioritise resources by supporting those with the highest care needs and optimising the allocation of large care packages.
Leveraging expertise in sleep health, Howz provides accurate sleep data to offer users a safety net and reduce the need for overnight sitters.
At the end of the assessment, the Howz Assessment Report summarises sleep, movement, nutrition and bathroom use in plain English.
